Cardcaptor Sakura 【HD Rewatch】 27 — Syaoran’s Face Turns Red

ponder

I return from a marathon of Cardcaptor Sakura on Blu-ray! I felt I should take a short break and continue with these posts since, well, I use my PS3’s Blu-ray player to watch BD anime, and after I started to switch to Disc 6, I noticed that the system was really — and I mean really — hot, so… yeah, I should probably cool it down with the CCS before I can never play Atelier Rorona ever again.

tl;dr I might wreck my PS3 because I love Cardcaptor Sakura way too much.

Badass Adorable Incarnate

Move over, Batman

Sakura begins the episode by having one of her dream seer moments again, and this time Ms. Mizuki appears in her precognitive dream.

If it wasn't obvious enough

If it wasn’t obvious enough…

At this point, she’s so enigmatic and mysterious that, on top of Syaoran’s weary demeanor around her, these dreams sort of trick the viewer into thinking Ms. Mizuki’s going to be some sort of main antagonist for the series — which would definitely have been a first at this point, as all the enemies up to this point have just been the Clow Cards and their shenanigans of the day. Of course, not everything is always what they appear to be.

HANYAAAAAN rules all

Sakura thinks she’s a good person, at least. The first time I watched this, that was good enough for me.

Cuter than Batman. Much cuter.

I feel like I should make a collective feature about Sakura’s various cosplay one day…

Aside from that, this same dream appeared when Sakura first met Kero-chan and also when she first met Syaoran, so obviously it must be some important event — at episode 27, you’d already notice that Sakura’s already caught more than half of the Clow Cards.

More magnificcent than The Thinker

I’m sure you will realize it yourself…”

I’m pretty sure this referred to either two things:

Syaoran does have chestnut brown hair

Character Establishment of the Day: Meiling really, really likes chestnuts

Third wheel Kero

So, uh…

go git drinks for us

Am I the only person that can vividly imagine Kero’s true form being their chauffeur when they go out for dinner as adults? Complete with an outfit made by Tomoyo and being paid with appetizers.

PLANT THE SEEDS OF CUTE LOVING

100% Pure

B-BUT SHE'S NOT A BOY

100%…Juice

Sakura’s cute spell latches itself onto Syaoran’s dere and it only grows from here.

I found this scene to be really sweet. Sakura and Syaoran share their feelings about Yukito with so much sincerity and, IIRC, this is their first one-on-one personal conversation since the Test of Courage episode. Then you see Syaoran’s real crush on Sakura act up, causing him to get embarrassed about the subject; also becomes flustered by Sakura’s friendliness and tries to run away.

My heart. Of course as he walks away, the Return card inside the tree finally makes its move by taking Sakura back in time.

MAY DECEMBER

So, Sakura’s little time travel adventure let’s us in on why Mizuki and Touya know each other: Touya and Mizuki dated in the past, when Touya was in 8th grade and while Mizuki was his student-teacher. I’ll just say this right now: As much as I like joking about Mizuki being a shotacon, if you’re okay with Sakura’s parents’ student-teacher/student romance, you’d be a hypocrite if you complained about this relationship. Yes, some relationshiops here are really questionable if you feel inclines to align it together with the tragic implications of our reality, especially with the age gap, but in the world of Cardcaptor Sakura, love is pure and non-judgmental. Much like Terada and Rika’s relationship in the manga — and frankly, that’s one of the aspects I love about the series.

That aside, this little excursion was for us, because Sakura couldn’t hear a damn thing that was going on (and thus had no idea Mizuki had a brief thing with her brother). Oh yeah, and apparently Mizuki’s magic is powerful enough that she was about to at least voluntarily foresee everything from here to the present, and possibly the future.

TALLEST KID IN CLASS

By the way, Touya was in 8th grade here?! He’s friggin’ HUGE!

STAHP SAKURA YOU'RE MAKING IT WORSE

STAHP TOUCHING HIM SAKURA, YOU’RE MAKING IT WORSE

Syaoran really deserved that hug. He saved the day with the Time card, which drained a bunch of his magic (and now Sakura’s cuteness is overheating his face, so he probably needs medical attention ASAP).

Kero's so handsome

While SyaoSaku continue to do their Ship Teasing, Kero looks towards the moon and mentions a being called “Yue.”

Cue a shot of Mizuki-sensei overlooking them from afar.

What the fuck is a Yukitoad

This week’s Kero-chan ni Omakase! talks about Touya and Yukito’s bikes.

Note: Kero always calls Yukito ゆきうさぎ (yuki usagi) because the kanji in his name literally means “snow rabbit”. Thus he’s calling him Snow Rabbit instead of Yukito. The NIS English subtitles tries to Americanize this by having Kero call him “Yukitoad”. I think it’s pretty funny regardless, but make of it what you will.
